Visa Mobile Office

Visa Mobile Office is designed to offer Visafone Subscribers access to and management of Personal Information – email, calendar and contacts from their mobile device (Motorola Q) using CDMA 1x/EVDO as the service bearer. Using Push technology subscribers will have real-time access and synchronization capability from mobile phones to their enterprise email, calendar and contacts. Subscribers will also have pull access to POP3 mails and other web-based email services like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.

Interested subscribers will need to purchase a Motorola Q9 for use with this. Visafone quotes the Q9 as being available for N59,999 only. Here is a quick specification sheet of the Motorola Q9:

  • Push and Pull Email
  • CDMA 800, 1900 Mhz, 1X and EVDO
  • Windows Mobile Standard 6.0
  • 2.4 inch (320 x 240 pixels) QVGA 65,536 color display
  • Opera Browser
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • MMS, SMS
  • Streaming audio and video
  • Supports MP3,WMA, MPEG4
  • USB, Bluetooth Connectivity
  • miniSD slot
  • A-GPS
  • Li – Ion, 1170 mAh Battery

Visa Mobile Office attracts a monthly access charge of N4, 000, and this includes unlimited data access on the Visa 1x 24/7 plan for both email and web browsing. Visa 1x 24/7 plan allows you to browse the Internet anytime anywhere within the Visafone coverage area at speeds of up to 153kbps on a shared basis.

The 1x plan does not give access to the faster EVDO platform though the Motorola Q9 is EVDO-enabled. Still, at N4,000 monthly for unlimited access, it is a good deal, especially considering that you can use the phone as a modem for internet access on a computer.

It looks to us that this about the best deal for mobile road warriors on any of the available CDMA networks.

  2. Archie,

True, Visafone coverage is limited, but it would seem that its in the same league as Etisalat’s at the moment. Visafone currently has coverage in “over 170 cities and towns across 22 States”.

We have used 1x extensively on Starcomms, Multilinks and Reltel and agree about the speed of the platform. While 1x’s top speed in theory is 153 kbps, we always found it to be unbearably slow. We keep wondering why the CDMA networks let this go on. Give us creepy-crawly GPRS anyday over CDMA 1x.

Anyone have any idea why 1x keeps delivering horrible speeds – apart from over-selling by the networks?

  3. N60,000 for a device that was released 2 years ago? ls Visafone serious? They should find out where Zoom Mobile sources its fairly priced CDMA smartphones.

I dont believe visafone’s claim of 170 ‘towns and cities’. look at their list of ‘towns and cities’ and you will see that city neigbourhoods are listed as towns! So in reality they dont cover much. Besides most towns i travel to are not covered. Etisalat covers them.

MTN and Zain (zain has several blind spots) have coverage from Abuja for the next 700km to my home base. i will go for that any day!

I think CDMA operators dont have the critical mass to offer sustained cheaper services; they are between a rock and a hard place. With limited coverage and slow internet speeds they are losing out to the GSM giants.

  5. Everybody is releasing “great packages” with both high and low points. It’s just a matter of waiting to see how much this their product can deliver.

So far so good even @ Nairaland, I haven’t heard one good thing about Visafone’s internet service. Let’s hope they’ve been revamped!
